1000base-T - Definition
1000base-T, also known as IEEE 802.3ab, refers to high performance Ethernet technology and products that provide gigabit-per-second transmission rates to address both service provider and enterprise customer requirements. 1000base-T runs on copper cables, using four pairs of Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair to achieve the gigabit data rate. A big advantage of 1000BASE-T is that existing copper cabling can be used instead of having to rewire your network with optical fiber.
