16-Bit Mode - Definition
16-Bit Mode refers to a state that an operating system or program code runs at. It is also known as Real Mode. 16-Bit operations aren’t protected from one another. Thus, a crashed 16-Bit application, will crash all other running 16-Bit programs. DOS and Windows 3.1 are examples of 16-Bit operating systems, while Windows 95 / 98 / Millennium are actually hybrid 16/32 bit operating systems.
