Backbone - Definition
A Backbone is a larger transmission path into which smaller lines feed. It is the communications path that carries the majority of traffic within a network. It is often a high-speed transmissions medium and can be used to link network segments, small networks, or multiple networks spread out over vast distances such as in the case of the Internet.
