DNS - Definition
DNS is an abbreviation Domain Name System. The DNS system forms one of the largest and most active distributed databases on the Internet. Without DNS, the Internet would literally shut down. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address just like a telephone number. This unique address is a rather complicated string of numbers called an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Simply put, DNS makes using the Internet easier by allowing a familiar string of letters, such as, Vistahelpline.com, (the “Domain Name”) to be used instead of the IP address string of numbers.
