JPEG - Definition
JPEG is an abbreviation for Joint Photographic Experts Group, which is the name of the committee that created the standard. It is most commonly referred as a graphic file format optimized for the compression of photographic images. The JPEG standard specifies both the codec, which defines how an image is compressed into a stream of bytes and decompressed back into an image, and the file format used to contain that stream. However, some visual quality is actually lost in the process.
