Modem - Definition
Modem is is an abbreviation for modulator/de-modulator. It is a device that enables computer to computer communication over public telephone lines. Modems work by modulating and demodulating computer signals. When transmitting, the modem transforms (modulates) signals from the digital form required by the computer to the analog form required by the phone line. When receiving, the modem reverses the action, demodulating the signal from analog back to digital form.
