Y2K - Definition
Y2K is an abbreviation for Year 2000. It was the year that many computers could have developed problems because of lack of foresight on the part of programmers. In the 1980s and before, most computer programs were designed to store only the last two digits of the years on all dates. After the Year 2000, these programs would have shown dates of two figures such as 00, which may be interpreted the same as 1900. This discrepancy could have caused widespread problems, especially in the large computer systems used in government and big industries without the needed Y2K fixes.
